The Rise of Electric Personal Watercrafts
Like electric cars, electric personal watercraft are becoming popular in Canada. Not only are these recreational crafts eco-friendly with no gas emissions, but they are also low noise, contributing to the sustainability of the boating industry and the environment.
Electric Boat and Jet Ski Benefits
These personal watercraft (PWC) have low or zero emissions, unlike those that need gas to operate. These watercraft are also noiseless, which adds to the value of recreational pursuits for boaters and others in public spaces near lakes, oceans, or marinas. Besides, electric motors feature innovative technology with fewer moving parts.
How They Work
Electric boats use a jet pump to draw water up the intake section and force this out the rear nozzle. The motor activates the jet pump impeller to generate electric propulsion during this process. Like a regular boat that uses gas, the electric craft must also have a battery. But unlike recreational boats that use fossil fuels, the electric motor generates immediate torque.
This electrification translates into rapid acceleration and extremely agile handling, which is vital to understand if you’re used to gas models. Advancements like the onboard energy management systems and powertrain also form part of the overall makeup of these electric vehicles, helping users monitor safe operations and enhance performance easily.
Battery Technology
One electric jet ski is the Taiga Orca. This jet ski’s lithium-ion batteries weigh about 125 kg, push out 23 kWh, and have a small 355V. Users can conveniently leave the jet ski unplugged for about five hours without experiencing any performance reduction in the battery pack.
A standard 240V outlet or level 2 charger is usually enough when used in a primary location. However, a fast (0 – 80% in 20 minutes) DC charger is best when used in various destinations. This type of PWC typically ranges from approximately 40 to 48 km and lasts 60 to 90 minutes.
Electric Watercraft
As new technology develops to meet the sustainability parameters set in Europe, innovations lead to advancements in the Canadian boating industry. This drive for eco-friendly boating recreation has created several electric boats and small watercraft that cater to European standards.
Often powered by the forerunners in electric motors, Vision Marine Technologies, some of these crafts include:
Electric SeaDoo: A high-speed, eco-friendly water sport dream from a leading brand. This prototype boasts the Range, Access, and Save modes, offering riders total control over an electrifying performance.
Taiga ORCA: An electric PWC that generates about 2 hours of high-speed (104 km/h) power, agility, and fun on the water.
Narke GT95 Electrojet: The sleek design underscores a top speed of 75 km/h and a range of 50 km.
X Shore Eelex 8000: The first electric boat built in Sweden is driven by a 175 kW (peak) and 145 kW (continued power) electric motor.
